At Sopra Steria I was part of the Vy – DROPS-team, where we helped Vy create a brand new operation centre for traffic management.
Vygruppen is one of the largest transport groups in the Nordic region and offers trains, buses and freight transport. The operations operations centre in Vy keeps track of all trains in Norway, and handles all critical incidents in train traffic. It consists of many employees with different functions and information needs. Critical information about trains, personnel and train performance can be found in many systems, and can be time-consuming to find your way around. The starting point was to gather important information and make it readily available to the operators to make faster and better decisions. We developed a new role-based Dashboard solution that brings all relevant information from a variety of underlying systems into one screen. Users do not have to retrieve information in the various source systems and receive notifications of nonconformities that need to be addressed. The solution provides users with better decision support for their needs, a more efficient operation, safer operations and a holistic, intuitive interface.
With design methodology for critical systems, we develop the right decision support for the various operators, which at the same time will be a common scalable solution. A number of interviews and workshops were conducted with the various user groups at the operations centre. Together we mapped which functions had the highest frequency and criticality. This was the starting point for concept development of individual digital interfaces for the various user groups. Tested and further developed with simple prototypes, we quickly got to production of an MVP that was put into operation after a few months. The customer has received better decision support that provides situational awareness and increased safety and efficiency. Especially in critical situations with limited time, the various user groups have gained access to the right information at the right time and thus had higher quality of work, faster solutions to problems and better information for passengers and employees on the trains.
